Chevron Claims To Have a Special Formulation Hydraulic Fluid.......15 Years Behind AMSOIL!
Several years ago, I wrote this letter which appeared in Lubes 'n' Greases Magazine- July 2000 in the Letters to the Editor Column:
"Dear Lubes 'n' Greases,
I would like to respond to the article by Joe O'Neil about the new "all season synthetic" tractor hydraulic transmission fluid from Chevron ("A Fluid For All Seasons, " April 2000, page 30). You quote Chevron's Jack A. Zakarian as stating that Chevron patented the product because of "the formulation is so special." In fact the Chevron patent reveals the product is no more "synthetic" than is the reformulated Castrol Syntec, i.e., it apparently contains no true synthetic base oils and represents yet another example in a disturbing trend of taking advantage of the recent looseness in the definition of what constitutes a synthetic oil.
In addition, the opening statement of the article would have us believe that equipment operators have had no choice but to change fluids with the seasons, and that Chevron has recently saved the day with the introduction of All-Weather THF. Not only that; Mr. Zakarian states that the John Deere J20C and the J20D specs could not be met by one fluid until the introduction of Chevron THF.
In fact, AMSOIL Inc., in Superior, Wis., has just such a product. Synthetic Tractor Hydraulic/Transmission Oil, ATH, which exceeds both the Deere specs, can certainly be considered "all weather", it is a true synthetic, and the product has been available for over 15 years!

AMSOIL
Synthetic
Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil (TBI) Has Been Discontinued. The product has been replaced with a new, earth-friendly high-quality biodegradable hydraulic oil designated (BHO).
![]()
New AMSOIL Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil (BHO) is a blend of high oleic oils, synthetic esters and ashless additives that meets the U.S. Federal bio-based procurement guidelines as defined in Section 9002 of the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002. (FSRIA) and is designed to biodegrade when subjected to sunlight, water and microbial activity.
AMSOIL Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil was announced as one of the "Top 10 New Products" at the World Ag Expo recently.

It can be used in any mobile or stationary application requiring an ISO VG 46 fluid where leakage or spillage would present an environmental hazard. Applications include construction, logging, farming, lawn and turf care or any environmentally-sensitive task where biodegradability and low aquatic toxicity is desired. The product is made with high quality oleic vegetable oil, synthetic esters and an anti-wear additive package that contains no heavy metals.
New AMSOIL Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil (BHO) meets the Vickers M2950-S and I-286-S standards, is hydrolytically stable and oxidation resistant. It provides excellent rust and corrosion protection, and a 12-stage FZG rating demonstrates its ability to protect gears and bearings against wear.
AMSOIL Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil is compatible with TBI and most synthetic and petroleum-based hydraulic fluids. Optimum results will be obtained by draining the previous fluid and refilling with new AMSOIL Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil. Excessive contamination by other fluids will adversely impact its biodegradability and aquatic toxicity performance.
AMSOIL Biodegradable Hydraulic Oil (BHO) is available in 5, 55 and 275-gallon package sizes. There are currently no plans to introduce other viscosities to the biodegradable hydraulic fluid line, but this decision will be continuously re-evaluated.

Synthetic Universal Power Steering Fluid (PSF): AMSOIL Synthetic Universal Power Steering Fluid provides excellent wear protection. Its synthetic formulation delivers better lubricity and reduced friction, resulting in cooler operating temperatures, longer component life and quieter operation. AMSOIL Power Steering Fluid is formulated with a high viscosity index. Its low pour point ensures immediate lubrication at startup and in cold temperatures, yet it resists thermal breakdown and maintains maximum protection in high temperatures.
Applications:
AMSOIL Synthetic Universal Power Steering Fluid meets or exceeds motor vehicle specifications for use in GM, Chrysler, Honda, Ford, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Saab, Subaru and Audi applications. (Please see the AMSOIL auto and light truck lookup guide for more information pertaining to your specific application.)
